ORKNEY REWARDED FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY EXPERTISE

The Orkneys have been at the forefront of renewable energy development for many years – simply because of their location – but also due to the people living there pushing it. Have we been too Complacent in Guernsey or too conservative with a small ‘c’? The Orkney islands are an inspiration. They already have a modicum of a hydrogen society and a hydrogen-powered ferry is in construction – called the HySeas III.

But if we could be Energy Positive by 2030 with our off-shore wind and tide efforts, could we win a prize? Maybe. The Orkney’s projects were assisted with funding from the European Union and the prize is an EU award. That said apparently eligibility can be made through Horizon 2020. It looks like its possible Guernsey could join that, tying in the idea of Guernsey as a renewable energy centre of excellence with its own University bringing together sustainability, green finance and digital.

Horizon 2020 emphasises excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling challenges to society. Striving to make sure “Europe excels in world-class science and allows easy innovation”. The Horizon 2020 program wishes to makes it easier for public and private sectors to work together for innovation. Something to be explored.
